SOLAWARE® display in Lexington

Lexington, MA— Lexington’s Town Pool & Splash Pad Complex recently underwent a series of upgrades that has been positively received by the community. Another great addition has also joined the complex, a new service designed to inform, educate, and protect residents against overexposure to UV rays.
The Lexington Recreation and Community Programs Department utilized an innovative sun safety education system– known as SOLAWARE®– to raise awareness amongst Town Pool visitors about the urgency of protection when the UV levels are high. SOLAWARE® measures the local UV radiation levels and converts this information into the SOLAWARE® Index– a translation of the standard UV index into the number of minutes until viewers should expect to experience skin damage without proper protection. This initiative serves as a reminder to Lexington residents to take precautions against the sun’s harmful rays while spending time at the pool.
Peter Coleman, Lexington’s Assistant Director of Recreation, stated: “It has been a pleasure working with the representatives from SOLAWARE® this summer to bring the SOLAWARE® display to Lexington. Educating the public about sun safety is very important for our department. Having the SOLAWARE® display at the Town Pool Complex has benefited our patrons as it provides information on how to protect yourself from the sun while also measuring the UV index as well as indicating, in real-time, how much time it will take until someone experiences skin damage if sunscreen is not applied. The display has been a great addition this summer and it has been well-received by the patrons and staff at the Town Pool.”
Although swimming is a great form of exercise and a common way to cool off in the summer, hanging around the pool leads to an increased exposure to the sun’s UV rays as they reflect off water. This makes thorough sun protection even more important to carry out. SOLAWARE® is equipped with an educational board that highlights sun safe practices to reduce the risk of sun damage and ultimately skin cancer while still enjoying time outdoors.
